WHY THE DIGITAL ENVIRONMENTAL ART PROJECT?

An alternative approach to addressing the climate crisis

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) stated that "20–40% of the global human population live in regions that, by the decade 2006–2015, had already experienced warming of more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial in at least one season." This is important because "the impacts of warming up to and beyond 1.5°C...fall disproportionately on the poor and vulnerable." Not only do we have responsibility for our own actions, we must recognise our actions impact other human beings, non-human animals, and the overall ecologies of which we are a part.

Often, solutions to the climate crisis are debated in elite circles of scientists, academics, and policy makers. This project seeks to challenge this relegation of knowledge to elite spheres and allows individuals to produce their own responses to the climate crisis or to analyse how art and sustainability intersect. It is also an opportunity to reflect on our own ways of engaging with nature and asses our role in the creation of and responses to the climate crisis.

To keep you safer, and less bored, during the COVID-19 outbreak we have chosen to run this event online. It will also be interesting to see if technology can help facilitate understandings of crises related to nature and human impacts.
